Three deaths at CNRL expose lack of oversight

Tories still haven't made investigation of 2007 deaths public

September 03, 2008

EDMONTON – “How many more workers must be killed at tarsands worksites before the Tories make workplace safety a priority?” NDP MLA Rachel Notley asked today, following news of the third death at the CNRL site in less than 17 months.

“We’re still waiting for Hector Goudreau to go public with a report investigating
the deaths of two Chinese foreign workers at the same site in April 2007,” Notley said.

“This tragedy shows that the Tory policy of trusting employers to police the safety of their own worksites doesn’t work.

“Workers cannot hold employers accountable for safety without comprehensive accident investigation reports. Seventeen months is too long to wait.
