EDMONTON – “It’s a Conservative cover-up,” NDP MLA Rachel Notley said today, of the Standing Committee on Health’s refusal to call three recently departed top public health officials to testify.
Notley tabled a motion to have the doctors appear before the committee to discuss their departure from Alberta Health – which came amid reports of government refusal to prioritize major public health issues such as the syphilis epidemic.
The motion was gutted at today’s meeting.
Health Minister Ron Liepert’s right-hand man, MLA Raj Sherman, amended the motion so that only Liepert and the acting chief medical health officer will be called to appear. The amended motion was passed.
“Liepert is covering up the link between the departure of these doctors, the government’s callous attitude toward public health, and a syphilis epidemic that has killed five babies,” Notley said.
“This motion gives Liepert another opportunity to say whatever he likes and denies Albertans the other side of the story. This is Tory stonewalling of a legitimate attempt to provide transparency.”

..the Taft Liberals are not the Decore Liberals. Decore had substantial heft in MLAs such as Bettie Hewes and Mike Percy and Grant Mitchell. Taft has a bunch of rookies still trying to make themselves into a team.
