REALITY CHECK: Are Conservatives Accepting Illegal Corporate Donations?

The Alberta NDP has written to Elections Alberta regarding inappropriate corporate donations accepted by the Wildrose and Progressive Conservatives, which are illegal under Alberta law.

Tonight, the two parties are hosting a joint event in Leduc featuring Wildrose MLA, Derek Fildebrandt and PC MLA, Mike Ellis. On the event’s promotional materials, a business in Leduc is listed as having sponsored the gathering.[1] The local Wildrose constituency association states on their Facebook page that a business has paid for the venue.[2] This is illegal under Bill 1, the first piece of legislation of the NDP government, which banned corporate and union donations to political parties.

“While the two MLAs in attendance voted with the government to ban corporate donations, it seems the Wildrose and PCs don’t believe the law applies to them,” said NDP Provincial Secretary Roari Richardson.

A second event is planned in Leduc for May 24, an exclusive 8-person fundraiser with Wildrose Leader Brian Jean. There is a competitive bidding process underway, and the 8 highest bidders will spend time with the opposition leader. On Facebook, the Wildrose Constituency Association has thanked a corporation for bidding on tickets. Under Bill 1, corporations are prohibited from buying tickets to party fundraisers.[3]
