Marilyn Assheton-Smith is a retired university professor. During her years of employment she worked as a nursing educator and public health educator, a community organizer, and a sociologist in the Faculty of Education. These years of work included constant mentoring and support of young co-workers and adult students, and extensive national and international commitments.
They also involved working for and with people wherever issues of unfairness and need arose, whether that meant First Nations peoples, women's groups, international students, or simply a few friends.
Upon retirement she made a conscious decision to turn her energy primarily to politics and a political party that would address not only these kinds of issues but address them through better people-oriented policies and laws, better planning, and a comprehensive understanding of the economy. She has worked tirelessly with the provincial party and local NDP constituencies since that time.
Marilyn has deep roots in Alberta and was raised in Calgary and Ferintosh. She has lived or worked in dozens of communities across the province and beyond. Edmonton became her home because of educational needs and employment; it is now her city of choice with the Ellerslie-Mill Woods area her community of choice and commitment.
