EDMONTON — As Albertans head out for the August long weekend, many families are feeling the unnecessary UCP strain of rising costs, including higher prices at the pumps and grocery checkouts. The Alberta NDP is calling on the government to suspend the provincial fuel tax and provide immediate relief to households facing affordability pressures.  

"This time last year, it cost families in Edmonton and Calgary about $90 to fill up a minivan. Today, that same trip to the gas station costs roughly $130," said Kyle Kasawski, Alberta NDP Shadow Minister for Affordability and Utilities. "That's nearly a 40 per cent increase in one year to a recurring household expense that families simply can't avoid." 

Pausing the provincial fuel tax would help offset high costs while families face continued pressure from sky-high prices on essentials. This proposal is part of the Alberta Affordability Agenda, a long-term plan aimed at reducing everyday costs.  

"The affordability crisis isn't limited to the gas pump," said Rakhi Pancholi, Alberta NDP Deputy Leader. "Albertans are paying more for groceries, utilities, housing, and everyday essentials. Families need real relief, which is why we've put forward the Alberta Affordability Agenda, a practical plan to lower costs and make life more affordable." The Alberta Affordability Agenda will help keep money in Albertans' pockets by: 

• Removing the 13c/litre gas tax when fuel prices are high 
• Cutting electricity bills by 10 per cent 
• Gradually increasing the minimum wage to $18 and tying it to inflation 
• Reducing grocery prices 
• Ending nuisance fees 
• Making it easier for Albertans to buy their first home
