EDMONTON - Danielle Smith’s $100 Energy Rebate program is a total failure. It has frustrated Albertans and is drowning in privacy problems and fraud attempts. It’s so bad that a reported 20,000 Albertans have already given up and walked away.
"The ’Dani Dimes’ scheme is a total mess,” said Court Ellingson, Alberta NDP Shadow Minister for Finance. “Albertans are abandoning applications while the premier has admitted to at least 35,000 fraudulent claims."
"For months, we've been calling on the UCP government to simply cancel the provincial gas tax while prices are high and give Albertans immediate relief at the pump."
As part of its Alberta Affordability Agenda, the Alberta NDP is committed to real relief by pausing the 13-cent-per-litre provincial gas tax whenever fuel prices are high, helping Albertans keep more of their hard-earned money.
"For many Albertans, driving isn't optional," said Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi. "People still need to get to work, take their kids to school, and get to medical appointments. When gas prices go up, families feel it immediately."
Danielle Smith is forcing Albertans to do more work, and jump through government hoops, just to get $100. The Alberta NDP is focused on practical solutions that will save an average family $350 a year at the pumps. We are also offering long-term solutions to actually lower costs for families.
"Albertans have been clear that affordability is their top priority, and they deserve a government focused on the exact same thing," continued Nenshi.
Alberta's NDP will continue rolling out affordability measures in the months ahead, all focused on helping Albertans get ahead and keep more of their money.
