RED DEER – Alberta’s New Democrats met in Red Deer on October 4 and 5 for a weekend of strategy and training that brought together members from across the province.

The two-day event began Saturday with the Provincial Council meeting, followed Sunday by Breakthrough, a full day of hands-on training focused on strengthening local organizations ahead of the next provincial election.

Council Passes Motion Supporting Alberta’s Teachers

Delegates debated and unanimously passed a motion affirming the Alberta NDP’s solidarity with teachers and education professionals.

The motion commits Alberta’s New Democrats to:

  • Recognize and respect the work of teachers and education professionals.
  • Defend and respect the collective bargaining process and condemn any attempt to undermine it.
  • Stand proudly with teachers if they strike to improve their working conditions and the learning conditions of students across the province.

“Albertans want strong public education and respect for the people who deliver it,” said a Council delegate. “This vote reflects our shared values and our belief that every child deserves a great education.”

Breakthrough Training Equips Volunteers and Constituency Leaders

Sunday’s Breakthrough sessions focused on the practical tools that build strong local organizations. Participants received targeted training in:

  • Volunteer recruitment and retention
  • Year-end fundraising
  • Building effective EDA infrastructure
  • Using digital tools efficiently and safely

The day concluded with a fireside chat, Building from Today, reflecting on lessons from the weekend and the road ahead.

Looking Ahead

The weekend marked the first Provincial Council following the 2025 Convention, providing members an opportunity to reflect, plan, and recommit to organizing across Alberta.

“Every conversation this weekend was about action,” said one participant. “We’re building the skills and confidence needed to win.”
