From May 2 to 4 Alberta’s New Democrats gathered for their largest convention in party history, rallying around the theme “Better Starts Now.” More than 1,500 delegates, volunteers, and observers gathered at the Edmonton Convention Centre, marking a record turnout for the party.
The three-day convention featured resolution debates, policy discussions, and strategic planning sessions, alongside workshops, caucus meetings, and panel conversations. Social events like the Leading the West Reception and A Toast to Ten Years offered space to connect and reflect on the party’s milestones, including the 10-year anniversary of forming government in 2015.
Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck took part in the Western Leaders Conversation panel, expressing solidarity with Alberta’s New Democrats. She shared her enthusiasm on social media, stating, "Meeting with so many incredible Alberta NDP MLAs at Convention in Edmonton. Guess what? They support staying in Canada too!"
Naheed Nenshi took the stage with a widely anticipated keynote, delivering his address as leader of Alberta’s New Democrats and setting a clear tone for the party’s direction. “This is not the Alberta we have to expect. It is not the Alberta we deserve,” he told the crowd. “Better is possible. And better starts now.”
Nenshi spoke of community strength and the path forward: “Our greatest natural resource is and has always been each other. Better starts when we invest in our people, our workers, our families, our children.” Delegates responded with overwhelming confidence, giving Nenshi 89.5% support in a leadership review vote.
With record attendance, a clear message of unity, and renewed purpose, Alberta’s New Democrats left the convention energized and ready to build a better Alberta.
