Maria Fitzpatrick was first elected on May 5th, 2015 as the MLA for Lethbridge-East. She is the Chair of the Legislature's Standing Committee on Privileges and Elections, Standing Orders and Printing. She also serves as a member on the Standing Committee on Alberta's Economic Future.
Prior to being elected, Maria spent over 30 years in the field of corrections. During that time, she spent 20 years within operations serving as a parole officer, in both institutional and community settings. She served as a recreation supervisor, a basic literacy teacher and the acting education co-ordinator. Her work was with the federal government and with the territorial government of the Northwest Territories. Maria finished her career in corrections as part of the national headquarters of the Correctional Service of Canada, doing policy and project management work. Maria also served for 3 years as the regional exective Vice-President of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, in the national capital region. Maria's career began as a teacher with the Catholic school board in St. John's, Newfoundland.
Maria was born and educated in Newfoundland. She attended Memorial University in St. John's and received a Diploma in Education from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia in 1988.
Maria resides in Lethbridge and has called Alberta home for almost 20 years now. She has three children.
