Alberta’s New Democrats are calling for every Member of the Legislative Assembly to publicly affirm they are proud Albertans, proud Canadians, and to clearly denounce separatism.
Earlier this week, Alberta's New Democrat Leader Naheed Nenshi sent a letter to all MLAs asking them to sign a straightforward pledge making their position clear to constituents. As of Friday morning, all 38 Alberta New Democrat MLAs have signed the pledge. No United Conservative Party MLAs or Independent MLAs have done so.
“This is a simple question of leadership and clarity,” said Rakhi Pancholi, Deputy Leader of Alberta’s New Democrats. “Albertans deserve to know where their elected officials stand. Denouncing separatism should not be controversial.”
The pledge affirms opposition to separatism and commits signatories to make their position clear to the people they represent. Alberta’s New Democrats say the issue has taken on increased urgency due to ongoing economic uncertainty and rising geopolitical tensions.
Alberta’s New Democrats say Albertans want their government focused on everyday priorities, including affordability, health care, education, and economic stability, not political distractions that create uncertainty and division.
“MLAs swear an oath to serve this province and country,” said Pancholi. “If the UCP cannot clearly denounce separatism and put the needs of Albertans first, then Albertans deserve a government that will.”
Alberta's New Democrats have made the full pledge document publicly available and is encouraging Albertans to ask their MLAs whether they have signed.
