EDMONTON — After an intense nomination race with over 3,800 local members engaged, Gurtej Singh Brar has been nominated by members of Alberta’s New Democrats in Edmonton-Ellerslie after a successful vote on Wednesday, May 14.
Gurtej Singh Brar is a communicator and community advocate who has spent years listening to families, workers, and newcomers. With strong local roots and a commitment to public service, he’s ready to represent Edmonton-Ellerslie in the Legislature.
“Edmonton-Ellerslie is full of possibility. I’m ready to work hard for this community and deliver the representation it deserves,” said Brar.
Leader Naheed Nenshi welcomed the nomination, highlighting the importance of strong local leadership at a time when Danielle Smith’s UCP government continues to fail Albertans.
"Gurtej is exactly the kind of candidate we need in Edmonton-Ellerslie to go up against Danielle Smith’s UCP government, which continues to ignore the real struggles people in this community are facing. From rising costs to cancelled health care investments, Gurtej will be a strong voice in the community and in the Legislature."
“I also want to thank the other candidates, Sana, Shaminder and Saadiq for their commitment to the party and to the province. They are great party-builders and community leaders, and I look forward to working with them in the future."
"Albertans across the province are demanding an ethical, competent government. Voters in Edmonton-Ellerslie will now have the opportunity to elect an MLA who will stand up for those values.”
A date for the by-election has not yet been announced, but under provincial legislation it must be called before September 24, 2025.
