The UCP has passed Bill 2, the Back to School Act, forcing teachers back to work and invoking the notwithstanding clause for the first time in Alberta’s history.
Teacher's are being forced back to work with no improvements to classroom conditions. Classrooms are still overcrowded. Teachers still do not have enough supports.
Leader of Alberta's New Democrats, Naheed Nenshi, said Danielle Smith “picked a fight with teachers” and chose the most unconstitutional path possible instead of negotiating in good faith.
“This bill enforces a rejected contract, threatens punitive fines, and attacks the rights of teachers and their union,” said Nenshi. “It’s an outrageous abuse of power that weakens the democratic rights of all Albertans.”
Alberta's New Democrats are calling on the government to repeal Bill 2, denounce the use of the notwithstanding clause, and return to the bargaining table with a fair offer that supports teachers and students.
